Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu explained
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art developed in Brazil by the Gracie family. It is designed to utilise leverage through a wide variety of techniques to execute movements that advance you to a dominant position over an opponent. There is no striking in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, the techniques focus on controlling your partner, using positioning, strategy and submissions to incapacitate your opposition. When training BJJ, you need to wear a GI/Kimono and there is a belt ranking system to indicate different levels and experience. Grappling, also known as Submission Grappling and No Gi, does not require a Gi/Kimono but is based around the same principles and systems as BJJ.
Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so effective?
BJJ is a complex and dynamic martial art that offers a wide variety of benefits including acquisition of skill and technique, sport specific mobility, increased muscular endurance and increased overall fitness. The techniques needed to control your opponent involve learning and being able to implement technical and physically demanding movements. BJJ will test your brain power and your physical abilities, it also offers a variety of benefits for mental wellbeing; it is very enjoyable!
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for me?
BJJ can be for anyone, at any level of fitness. We are able to teach people of all levels from basic through to complex techniques, alongside drills and contact sparring. The hardest thing about starting is getting through the door for your first session, but we strongly believe that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.
