CrossFit explained
Firstly, what is fitness? Commonly being fit is only associated with aerobic capacity (cardiovascular endurance) e.g. running, swimming and cycling. These sports require fitness but only a part of fitness. Fitness involves a lot more. We believe in training all 10 general physical skills, which also include stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, accuracy, agility and balance.
CrossFit is unique in its capacity to work all of these skills in a constantly varied way, so you do not get used to always training the same physical skills. Our sessions at CrossFit Henleaze are structured so there is a mix of gymnastic focused, conditioning based and strength based sessions with fairly complex movements always under the supervision of a coach and within a small group of people to ensure there is quality coaching for each member.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is defined as constantly varied functional movements performed at (relatively) high intensity.
This means that our daily workouts are different every day, and every week is different too. Our workouts are based upon a foundation of functional movements which are movements that allow us to move big loads effectively in a short time and they mimic every day movements. We will teach squats, deadlifts, presses and pulls alongside running, rowing and biking with a variety of gymnastic movements thrown in for good measure. High intensity is relative to each individual and the group class environment tends to bring out the best of each athlete.
At CrossFit Henleaze, we believe that intensity, although being crucial for results, does not come at the expense of quality and safety of movement. Therefore, we will always prioritise good technique and sound mechanics. Our team of coaches enjoy teaching more complex weightlifting and gymnastic movements which creates the right level of interest and challenge for all our members.
How will I get fitter with CrossFit?
What happens in a CrossFit class?
Each class is an hour long and guided by a qualified coach. The coach will explain the workout of the day before taking the class through a specially tailored warm up. All of the skills and movements for the daily workout will be taught and practised before the class do them. At the end of the class, there is always time to stretch and unwind as a group. We strive for our classes to be fun and friendly so games are often programmed so everybody warms up with a smile.
Workouts vary in length so some days it might be a longer and slower workout, other days it might be short and fast and others could be heavier and/or more technical. They are constantly varied to keep the body guessing and you wanting more.
What types of CrossFit class are there?
All of our classes are fully coached from start to finish and can be tailored to any ability level. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned fitness enthusiast, we will modify every workout so that you get a great workout every time you come to class!
